How to Use Pink Noise as a Spectral Ruler

Pink noise is one of the simplest reference-matching tricks you have — and it is built right into Portable Mono Speaker Check. Here is how I use it to compare the balance of my mix against a reference, one element at a time.

In the last article I showed you how a mono speaker exposes hidden balance problems. This time I want to focus on the second tool inside Portable Mono Speaker Check — pink noise — and how it works as a kind of spectral ruler for your mix.

The method

Pink noise can be a surprisingly effective way to compare the balance of your mix with a reference. The process is simple:

Play the reference track, turn on pink noise, and raise its level until the element you are focusing on — for example, the vocal, bass, or snare — is only barely audible.

Then switch to your own mix without changing the noise level.

You will immediately hear whether that element disappears too quickly, stays too prominent, or has a different spectral balance from the reference.

A practical example

For example, the bass in the reference may still reveal its low fundamentals through the noise, while your bass may expose only its upper attack. That suggests the low end is too weak and the attack may be too prominent.

In the video, I use this technique to compare vocal level and discover that my vocal also needs a little more lower-mid body — which I then add with BodyLift.

Why it works

It is a simple but very practical method, especially when you are working with subtle differences, or your ears are already tired. Constant, full-spectrum noise gives every element the same neutral backdrop, so the only thing that changes between the reference and your mix is the balance itself.
